Neighbors Say Manhattan College Nightlife Has Gotten Out Of Control

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Manhattan College is located right in the heart of the Riverdale section of the Bronx, and some residents say they are dealing with a case of college students gone wild.

As CBS2's Jessica Schneider reported, neighbors said partying has gotten completely out of control.

People who live around 238th Street said the late night scene in downtown Riverdale often features loud profanity, and ridiculous stunts.

Neighbors are fed up and have taken their video cameras out to capture what they say is out-of-control behavior and vandalism by the students at Manhattan College.

"The college students here, when they get out of the bars at night are cursing, screaming, urinating," Linda Waldstein said.

Deb Faber moved to the neighborhood two years ago with her 14-year-old daughter Ruby.

They live on the first floor and said it's sleepless night after sleepless night.

"I'm very upset by it. I'm upset enough to consider seriously moving," she said.

"I've been here for 40 years. These problems are the last five years. A lot of these students are very nasty. They have fights on the street," Waldstein added.

Many Manhattan College students live off campus in the midst of hundreds of non-students.

The school has a good neighborhood policy for those students.

"Any students found to have violated that policy will be disciplined appropriately. At the same time, we will continue to communicate proactively with our neighbors, the 50th precinct, and other concerned groups," said Peter McHugh, a school spokesman.

People said the late night hoots and hollers are persistent.

"Maybe they should spend more time studying than drinking," Mark Goret said.

Local NYPD officials said they are well aware of the situation. There was a community meeting at the 50th Precinct Thursday night, and cops are on patrol until 4 a.m. on the weekends.
