Major Fire Rips Through Old C-Town Supermarket In South Amboy, N.J.

SOUTH AMBOY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - A fire ripped through a shuttered C-Town supermarket in South Amboy, New Jersey Monday afternoon, sending a billow of acrid smoke over the entire town.

As Joe Biermann reported from Chopper 2, the fire broke out late in the afternoon at the C-Town store at 611 Bordentown Ave., at Route 35.

The fire immediately went to three alarms and was later raised to four alarms – prompting an increased response in fire equipment and personnel.

Rolling orange flames were seen consuming the building, and the roof collapsed. The fire was consuming the entire supermarket, and winds of about 20 mph were blowing smoke about 1,500 feet into the air.

By 5:30 p.m., firefighters were making progress and much of the smoke was white, Biermann reported. But there was not much left of the store.

There were reports of minor injuries, Biermann reported.

Northbound Route 35 was closed near the scene for the staging of fire equipment, Biermann reported.

The same store was damaged by another fire in January, and it has been closed since then, CBS2 has learned. It was not known if any construction work was being done at the time of the incident.
