Long Island Man Charged In October Hit-And-Run Death

YAPHANK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Suffolk County police have arrested the driver they believe struck and killed a pedestrian in Miller Place before fleeing last year.

After a nearly six-month investigation, police have charged Christopher Campbell, 35, of Sound Beach, with leaving the scene of an incident involving a fatality.

At around 11:15 p.m. on Oct. 18, he allegedly hit Tracy Ann Mangino, 40, with a commercial, box-type truck and kept going.

Mangino was walking along North Country Road near Block Island Drive, just steps from her home after visiting a friend, when she was struck by the eastbound vehicle.

The mother of a teenage girl, Mangino was transported by ambulance to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson, where she succumbed to her injuries.

"Could you please turn yourself in so we could know why you just left her there on the side of the road?" Kathleen Mangino, the victim's mother, said to CBS2's Jennifer McLogan in October.

Campbell is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday at First District Court in Central Islip.
