NYC Food Truck Lunch: Lamb Curry From Hyderabad

Perry, the founder of New York Street Food, brings you his latest review on New York City street food.

Last week we were in the mood for Indian food, and there are a few places to get it on the streets of NYC. One of them is a street cart called Hyderabad, named after a city in India. The cart is located on 50th St just west of 6th Ave. That block is a virtual United Nations of street food, with Hyderabad usually parked in the middle of the bunch.

Hyderabad has a fairly extensive menu, but we decided to go with the Daily Special, lamb curry, for $10. As we approached the cart, most of the other customers appeared to be of Indian descent, which is generally a good sign.

Opening the container, we could see the lunch contained boneless cubes of real lamb. This wasn't what the Middle Eastern halal carts call "lamb", the processed meat we try to avoid. This cart was halal too, but they used real lamb instead of that processed stuff.

Real lamb is expensive, which accounted for the $10 price tag, but there was a nice amount of meat in the stew.

As lunch progressed, the spiciness of the curry sauce started building. The curry sauce wasn't particularly spicy at first, but it certainly built up as you ate lunch.

The lamb and curry sauce were served over basmati rice. The basmati rice was done well - soft and fluffy.

A small side salad of lettuce, cucumber and red cabbage was included. It wasn't much of a salad, but did help us cool off after the spicy curry sauce.

$10 is about the top of what we want to pay for lunch on the street, and most of the items at Hyderabad are less expensive. Getting real lamb curry for lunch for $10 is a good deal, but you can easily order a tasty Indian lunch from Hyderabad for $5-8.

Hyderabad does not do the social media dance, but you can easily find them weekdays on the north side of 50th St, just west of 6th Ave.
