Man Shot, Killed By Police In Jamaica, Queens

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A man has died after being shot by police Wednesday evening in Jamaica, Queens -- allegedly after he fired at officers.

The man was shot by officers at 9:22 p.m. at 168-39 Highland Ave. in Queens, police said. As CBS2's Valerie Castro reported, a portion of busy Hillside Avenue nearby the scene remained shut down at 11 p.m.

Law enforcement sources told CBS2 that officers first responded to calls of shots fired in the area, and spotted a man with a gun.

Sources said the man allegedly fired shots at officers, who returned fire and hit him once in the chest.

A gun believed to belong to him was recovered at the scene, sources said.

The man was in traumatic arrest when he was taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, police said. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.

No one else was hit, and no officers were injured, sources said. It was not clear what the man was allegedly firing at before police arrived, or how many shots he fired, sources said.
