Strong Winds Topple Trees, Cause Other Damage Across Area

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A fast-moving storm Wednesday left serious damage in its wake.

Emergency crews in the late afternoon were sent to the scene of a home in Bloomfield, New Jersey home after heavy winds and rain moved through the area, causing a tree to uproot and crash onto the house on Linden Avenue, CBS2's Christine Sloan reported.

No one was home at the time of the incident, but a neighbor told Sloan a friend of hers was walking by the tree as it came crashing down.

"She was just walking the dog and she was crossing the street when she heard the noise. She ran like heck...that was it -- she walked on the other side."

The woman walking her dog was not hurt, Sloan reported.

The power was out at the home. Crews were trying to remove wires that got tangled up in the tree and were being extremely cautious, Sloan reported.

The storm also toppled a tree in Wood-Ridge, New Jersey Wednesday afternoon.

A tangle of tree limbs and power lines were left mixed on Berger Street, CBS2's Dave Carlin reported.

"The winds were like 60 miles an hour. The tree came down and the power lines, the power lines too," said Rosie Marrin.

No one was injured and the tree limbs did not damage the house, Carlin reported.

"I feel very lucky nobody was in the house, no damage to the house. You can't ask for anything else," said homeowner Jennifer Theofanis.

In Newark, a tree fell onto a minivan belonging to Nelson Carrera. He said he had only just parked it on Summer Avenue.

"I parked it, two minutes later I heard a big boom," he said. "Looked outside and the tree was down."

Meanwhile in Downtown Brooklyn, high winds rocked the scaffolding atop a building on Pearl Street, and the dangling danger forced police to shut down streets for the resulting high-tension, high-altitude repair job.

But for the storm's bright finale, CBS2's cameras caught sight of a rainbow while heading east on the Long Island Expressway near Syosset.
