Danbury Teacher Appears In Court On Sexual Assault Charge

DANBURY, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Danbury High School science teacher appeared briefly in court on charges that she sexually assaulted one of her students.

According to an arrest report, Kayla Mooney, 24, was charged March 31 after an investigation into a complaint she made to school officials about being harassed by the boy's girlfriend.

The boy involved told them about the sexual relationship and police confirmed parts of his story after obtaining emails the he and Mooney exchanged, authorities said.

The first-year teacher was placed on administrative leave in February.

The News-Times reported that Mooney appeared Monday in Danbury Superior Court, but her arraignment on charges of second-degree sexual assault and distributing alcohol to a minor was postponed after her attorney said he had requested evidence from prosecutors.

Mooney has not commented on the allegations.

"We are all very disappointed that this has happened to one of our faculty members," Danbury schools Superintendent Sal Pascarella told the News-Times last month.
