Police Hunt For Queens Youth Football Coach's Killer

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police are investigating after a popular youth football coach was gunned down in the middle of the afternoon in Queens.

Jerwaine Gorman, 38, was sitting in the passenger seat of his Mercedes sedan on a quiet street in Jamaica on Wednesday when he was approached by a gunman who fired a single fatal shot and fled, CBS2's Tony Aiello reported.

Gorman was a father of two young children and a coach with the Rosedale Jets youth football program.

On Facebook, a fellow coach posted: "I feel like I got punched in the stomach by Mike Tyson. We lost a good brother, coach and friend. RIP Coach Gorman."

"Mr. Gorman seems to be a strong member of the community," NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said.

Boyce said a witness saw the gunman flee to a house one block from the crime scene. Police found a gray hoodie inside that matches what the gunman was wearing.

For several years, the victim owned Gorman's, an ice cream parlor on Merrick Boulevard.

He lived in a large Rosedale home and was active in local Democratic politics.

But police are also digging into the victim's background and have found legal and financial problems.

Court records show Gorman had been ordered to pay thousands of dollars to the Cold Stone Creamery ice cream chain for trademark infringement and that he owed more than $150,000 in unpaid loans to the Small Business Administration.

Police are working to determine a motive, hoping it leads them to whoever pulled the trigger.

Investigators were executing a search warrant Thursday night at the home near the schooting scene and hope to find the murder weapon.
