Mother's Day Gift Ideas For Both Shoppers And Do-It-Yourselfers

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- With Mother's Day just a week away, a couple of experts stopped by the CBS2 studios to offer up gift ideas.

Katlean DeMonchy, editor-in-chief of Nextpert.com, noted that Origins is offering free mini-facials.

"So you know, Mom needs a little me time, so get her in and get her pampered," DeMonchy told CBS2's Diane Macedo. "Make her feel good. And then you might want to consider a treatment."

Sewing is making a big comeback. DeMonchy pointed to an embroidery computerized sewing machine by Brothers. It has a back-lit LCD screen with tutorials and different fonts for monogramming.

If you want to give Mom a homemade gift -- something other than a macaroni necklace or popsicle stick picture frame -- Amanda Kingloff, a Michael's craft ambassador and author of "Project Kid," had some suggestions.

She said kids of all ages can make necklaces using beads and embroidery floss.

"And they really look like something you might buy in a boutique, and they're very easy to make," Kingloff told Macedo.

Kingloff also suggested buying an inexpensive candle with a fragrance your mom likes and then buying a cotton rope and using a hot glue gun to wrap the rope around the jar. You can saturate the cotton with watercolor paint to make stripes.

"So it kind of has like a very beachy feel," Kingloff said.
