NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Nassau County police are looking for a man they said tried to lure girls into his vehicle.

Five incidents have been reported since April 13 in Lakeview, Lynbrook and Valley Stream, police said.

In two cases, the man tried to entice the girls with candy. In three of the incidents, the children were walking to or from school.

The girls range in age from 8 to 16.

The suspect is described by police as a black man, 20-30 years of age, driving a black vehicle, either a van or SUV, with possibly a dent on the right rear door and tinted windows.

Nassau County Police offered the following tips:

-- If a stranger stops their car and asks the child questions, run the opposite direction and tell authorities.

-- Always walk in groups and stay close to the curb, away from shrubbery and doorways.

-- Do not take shortcuts through alleys, vacant lots or parks.

Residents who witness any suspicious activity are urged to call 911 immediately.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.  All callers will remain anonymous.
