Connecticut High School Committee Deems 6 Dresses Inappropriate For Prom

HARTFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Shelton High School officials say their review of prom dresses this week has turned up just six that will not be allowed at Saturday's dance.

School officials made national headlines when they announced over the intercom last Friday that dresses that were backless, showed midriff or had cutouts on the side would be considered inappropriate and not be allowed at prom.

After an outcry from students and parents, students were invited to submit photos of their dresses to a committee of seven female staff members for a thumbs-up or thumbs-down decision.

School district spokeswoman Ann Baldwin said the committee reviewed more than 150 dresses.

"You really have to take it on a case-by-case basis, so what girls or parents who had any questions about their dresses were asked to do was to email a front, side and rear view of their dress," Baldwin told WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau. "The committee then reviewed those dresses and made the decision based on what they saw."

Baldwin said some students who had dresses rejected are getting material added to them, while others have indicated they will wear other dresses.

Baldwin said the school simply wants their students to dress nicely for the prom, as they would for any school event. Everybody took it in good stride, she said.
