Police: 18-Year-Old Arrested In Attack On Good Samaritan During Brooklyn McDonald's Brawl

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police on Saturday said they arrested a suspect in connection with an attack on a Good Samaritan who tried to break up a brawl at a Brooklyn McDonald's.

As CBS2's Dave Carlin reported, police said Kendale Hamilton, 18, was arrested for gang assault on the 43-year-old man – Iver Whittingham.

Hamilton's arrest comes on the heels of the arrest of another teen involved in the brawl. Asjaney Naraine, 16, is accused in the assault on a 17-year-old girl that started the melee.

During a chaotic caught-on-video brawl that went viral, Whittingham is seen trying to break up a fight between two teenage girls. But then he himself became a target of violence – punched by a shirtless attacker whom police identified as the just-arrested Hamilton.

Whittingham, who was left with a big knot on his head, explained why he risked his own safety like that.

"I have a daughter, and I always think if something like that happened, I would hope someone would do that for my daughter," Whittingham told CBS2's Ilana Gold on Friday.

The chaos started around 3 p.m. Thursday at the franchise on Flatbush Avenue Extension in Downtown Brooklyn.

On Saturday, police released the photo of one of several suspects wanted in connection with the assault on Whittingham. They also released a second photo of a suspect seen smiling broadly in the video wanted for inciting a riot.

He is allegedly the one who says: "Kill him! Why're you not killing him?" as Whittingham is attacked.

Cellphone video of the incident first showed two teenage girls punching and pulling hair, at times together on the ground. The man capturing the brawl on video narrates.

Elizabeth Ballinger, 17, was left battered and bruised.

"I'm in pain -- serious bad pain," she said earlier this week. "My body hurts."

That's followed by some back and forth shoving, and the man appears to throw a punch, at which point the crowd turns on him and he is mobbed by teens throwing punches.

"I have never been beaten like that in my entire life. It's a tragedy," Whittingman said.

After a trip to the hospital and a giant knot on his head, he said he didn't regret getting involved.

Victim Ballinger said her family couldn't be more grateful that Whittingham tried to help.

"He's a hero. He's got to get a good Samaritan award for that," Ballinger's father said.

There's usually a security guard at the McDonald's at all times, but it's not clear where that person was Thursday.
