Small Dog Recovering After Fighting Off Coyote In Saddle River

SADDLE RIVER, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A small dog is recovering after fighting off a coyote in New Jersey over the weekend.

The dog was attacked in his owner's backyard on Oak Road in Saddle River on Sunday night.

The 10-pound Yorkie-Bichon, named Oogie, fought with the coyote and escaped, 1010 WINS' John Montone reported. The dog was taken to an animal hospital and is recovering with its family, police said.

Officers haven't been able to find the coyote. Animal control and the state Division of Wildlife are investigating the incident.

So far this year, two people have been attacked by coyotes in New Jersey.

Some residents are concerned, but others said they're not afraid.

"Scary stuff, they have to do something about them," one Saddle River resident said.

"I'm not scared," a man said. "They kill everything, but I'm OK."

"They're not going to attack me, that's for sure," another man said. "No fear."

Animal Control warns owners that if their pet is attacked they should not touch the saliva left by the coyote for fear of rabies.

Police are also urging residents not to leave small animals or children outside unattended.
