Jones Beach Undergos Facelift Just In Time For Summer

JONES BEACH (CBSNewYork) -- Major renovations are underway at Jones Beach State Park not only to improve access to outdoor fun, but to expand it.

CBS2's Vaness Murdock surveys the summer hot spot to see if the renovations will be done in time for beach season.

As the weather gets warmer, crowds will grow at the beaches and that's exactly why the state park is undergoing renovations, thanks to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who initiated a $65 million dollar renovation of Jones Beach.

The focus of the renovations is on the facilities and a field that hasn't been renovated since the '70s. Now $2.9 million will go towards bringing it into the 21st Century. Renovations of the bathrooms are in progress and expected to be completed this weekend.

The overhaul food service space is still being worked on, but will be open this summer.

The east mall will undergo an $18 million renovation and the former site of the boardwalk restaurant will host a new fresh food market as of 2017.

The hope is that people everywhere will take notice of these renovations meant to enhance the experience at Jones Beach.
