Police Investigating After Attempted Burglaries In Scarsdale, Hartsdale

SCARSDALE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Homeowners in Westchester County are on edge after two attempted burglaries in one night.

Police say the owner of the home on Fox Meadow Road in Scarsdale heard a noise in her sunroom Sunday morning.

And as CBS2's Matt Kozar reported, when she went to investigate, she came face to face with a burglar who fled on foot.

The suspect tried his luck a second time at a home in Hartsdale, Kozar reported. But the homeowner there called 911 and detained the suspect until police arrived and placed him under arrest.

"People are nervous and people are afraid," said Jody Zucker.

Zucker lives on Fox Meadow Road.

"I think the majority of the homes do have alarm systems on the street, I know we do," she said. "I don't know if people put their alarms on every night. I think that may be an issue."

It's the latest in a series of burglaries in wealthy Westchester neighborhoods.

In Bronxville, police are looking for suspects after three home break-ins were reported in less than two weeks.

It's unclear if those cases are connected to the ones in Scarsdale and Hartsdale, Kozar reported.

Security experts say burglars who purposefully enter occupied homes may be interested in threatening a family to get them to reveal where money and jewelry are hidden.

But John Lewis, who lives in the area, said he's not overly concern.

"I tend to think it's a random event," said Lewis. "The police have been covering the area well and I feel perfectly fine."

Police are asking residents to lock their doors and stay vigilant.
