Surveillance Video Purportedly Shows Same Thief Stealing Same Car Twice

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- They say lighting almost never strikes twice, but what about a car thief?

Surveillance video purportedly shows a suspect stealing a Lexus and then trying to take it a second time.

As CBS2's Weijia Jiang reported, the suspect is seen creeping into the victim's house last Sunday in the Wakefield section of the Bronx.

"He came through the front door," said homeowner Debbie Raymore, who admitted she left the front door unlocked.

The intruder then took her car key and drove off with her brand new 2015 Lexus SUV around 8:30 p.m.

Remarkably, police found the car in perfect condition the very next day.

But then: "He's very stubborn, coming back to get the car a second time," said Raymore.

That's right, the suspect, who is believed to be a teenager, came back one day later.

Raymore's surveillance camera above her front porch captured the suspect. This time, he wore a hoodie and backpack.

"He was determined to take the car," Raymore said.

The second time, the thief got through Raymore's locked gate and to the car, but a quick-thinking neighbor made sure he did not get far.

"I said 'Do you need help with something?'" said Raymore's neighbor Mark. "He took off down the block and I started chasing him."

Mark was able to scare the suspect away, but wasn't able to catch up. Now, he says he's concerned.

"He's very brazen, very brazen," Mark said. "That makes you think what else would he do?"

Raymore said she now locks her front door and refuses to live in fear. She also has a message for the thief: "Leave my car alone."

Raymore added that she got a new key for the car and is hoping third time is not the charm.
