YONKERS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A 4-year-old girl accidentally shot herself in the face late Monday night, Yonkers police said.

It happened just after 11 p.m. at her apartment building on Walnut Street.

The girl is being treated in the intensive care unit at Jacobi Medical Center, according to police. She was last listed in critical condition, police said.

People who live in the neighborhood can't believe what happened.

The girl's mother was reportedly outside at the time and an aunt was inside the home.

Police have recovered a semiautomatic handgun and interviewed numerous people, WCBS 880's Paul Murnane reported.

"It was crazy, roped off. We couldn't get through the street," Yonkers resident Sharron Gatewood told CBS2's Ilana Gold. "It was like that for a couple of hours, and I kind of figured someone got shot, but I didn't know it was a little kid."

"I be thinking it sound like firecrackers at one point, but then like it's not the Fourth of July yet so ain't nobody got no fireworks," a neighbor, who is the mother of a 4-year-old girl herself, told Murnane. "That's when somebody told me that they heard gunshots."

Police are looking into the origin of the weapon. The investigation is ongoing
