Clock Ticking For Connecticut Lawmakers To Strike Budget Deal

HARTFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- Just days before the Connecticut General Assembly is set to adjourn for the session, there is still no agreement on a new state budget.

Even Gov. Dannel Malloy has indicated the budget plan outlined by his fellow Democratic lawmakers relies too heavily on new and higher taxes.

Republicans, the minority party in both chambers, have a plan that calls for no new taxes and are frustrated that none of their lawmakers have been invited to budget talks, WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau reported.

"The Democrats want to tax again. And if you remember four years ago, we had the largest tax increase in our state's history," Sen. Rob Kane, R-Conn., ranking member of the Appropriations Committee, told Schneidau. "They are looking to do that yet again.

"We put forth an alternative budget that had no tax increases, so it can be done," he added.

The legislative session is scheduled to adjourn June 3.
