NJ Father Holding Baby Hostage Fatally Shot By Monmouth County SWAT Team

MIDDLETOWN, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A New Jersey man who was holding his 13-month-old son hostage was fatally shot by a member of the Monmouth County SWAT team, officials said.

The child's mother called police late Tuesday night to say 39-year-old Scott McAllister was intoxicated, had beaten her and was threatening to harm their child with a knife, according to officials.

When police arrived, the mother of the child had fled from the house after being beaten, police said.

Officials say McAllister was locked inside the Middletown home with the boy and refused to allow police to enter.

The attorney general's office says the Monmouth County Emergency Response team negotiated for hours asking McAllister to turn over his child, CBS2's Christine Sloan reported.

The SWAT team forced its way in at 4:30 a.m. and a member shot McAllister.

His son, who was near him, was not harmed.

Some neighbors in the beach community told Sloan they heard the negotiations between police and McAllister holed up inside the house on Bayside Parkway.

From his unit in a multifamily home five doors down, Carmine Ruocco says he could hear every word swat negotiators were saying to the suspect, like "answer your phone, come out, everything will be okay…"

"They were very comforting him to him," Ruocco added.

Neighbors Describe Hearing SWAT Team Negotiating With NJ Father

"At 3 o'clock this morning, I hear two gun shots in a row ... bang, bang ... the cop says over the microphone shots fired ... and then it went quiet after that," said a man who didn't want to be identified.

"From what I understand, he was a local fisherman...I really don't know much about him ... he lived on this street since last fall," said Ron Roy.

"He's a fisherman, he'd drop off fresh tuna, fresh bass to us," McAllister's neighbor told 1010 WINS' Rebecca Granet.

"This is not a normal thing in the neighborhood. It is very quiet," said resident Susan Morris. "We didn't even hear what was going on. It is sad -- just a very sad situation."

The state Attorney General's Shooting Response Team is investigating the shooting to determine if it was justified.
