Downed Wire Leads To Hour-Long Delays For NJ TRANSIT, Amtrak Trains

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- NJ TRANSIT and Amtrak trains were delayed for up to an hour at Penn Station late Wednesday afternoon, after an overhead wire came down.

As CBS2's Tracee Carrasco reported, long lines and huge crowds formed at the depot, as annoyed commuters waited around during the Wednesday evening rush.

An Amtrak spokesman said the downed wire was at the Sunnyside Yard in Queens, and engineers were out making repairs.

It was no immediately learned how long the repairs would take. But commuters' patience was wearing thin.

"I'm very upset. I'm tired and I want to go home," one woman said. "It's very warm. It's hot. It's very hot down here, especially because there's a lot of people here."

"We come from the Yankee game. We're trying to get back to New Jersey. It looks like we're going to be delayed for quite a while," a man added. "We might miss dinner, but we'll get out of here somehow, I hope."

Late Wednesday afternoon, NJ TRANSIT tickets and passes were being cross-honored on NJ TRANSIT buses out of the Port Authority Bus Terminal, as well as on PATH trains.

Shortly before 6 p.m., Amtrak said it had fixed the overhead wire problem, and trains were running with the power back on. But NJ TRANSIT said 45- to 60-minute delays persisted.
