New Bill Could Require Connecticut Students To Take On 3 New Subjects

CONNECTICUT (CBSNewYork) -- Middle and High School students in Connecticut could soon be required to take on even more subjects in school.

The House of Representatives voted 110-33 Wednesday in favor of a bill requiring public schools to add three new subjects into the curriculum.

The three subjects include CPR, safe use of social media and computer programming.

But is it all too much of a burden on the students?

WCBS 880's Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau talked to State Representative Gail Lavielle, ranking member of the education committee, who is among those voting against the bill.

"The problem is that over the past several years we have continued to increase the curriculum requirements on our public schools and then we keep having to delay implementing them because the schools can't do it," Lavielle said.

Lavielle added that she knows some urban school students still struggle with basic reading and this alone requires full time effort from teachers.

The bill already passed the Senate. It now moves to the governor.
