Hoops Turnaround Earns Joe Mihalich Extension At Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Joe Mihalich, who has overseen a two-year turnaround of the basketball program at Hofstra, has signed a contract extension.

Director of Athletics Jeffrey Hathaway announced the extension Monday. No other details were given.

Mihalich inherited a program that won seven games the previous season and the Pride won 10 games the first season and were 20-14 last season, losing to William & Mary in the Colonial Athletic Association tournament semifinals. They lost to Vermont in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational.

"Joe has enhanced our success in the classroom and on the court," Hathaway said in a statement. "The future is very bright for the Hofstra Basketball program under Joe's leadership and I'm thrilled that the contract extension will enable him to be at Hofstra for many years to come."

The men's basketball program achieved a perfect score of 1000 for the 2013-14 year, Mihalich's first, in the latest Academic Progress Rate released last week.

Mihalich enters his 18th season as a head coach with 295 wins. He coached at Niagara from 1998-2013.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my first two seasons here at this great University," Mihalich said. "The mission is far from over but I know we are on the right track and I look forward to many more successful seasons for the Hofstra Men's Basketball team. The program has made great strides on the court, in the classroom and in the community and my thanks goes out to all who have helped make our successes possible. We can't wait for next season to begin. Go Pride!"
