New Jersey Elementary School Competing To Win New Play Set

WOOD RIDGE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A New Jersey first-grader is on a mission to secure a new playground for her elementary school.

As CBS2's Meg Baker reported, Fiona Helly's shirt says it all: "Winning is my style."

"My school wants a new play set," she said.

Pre-kindergarten through third-grade students at Catherine E. Doyle Elementary School in Wood Ridge are competing in the Terracycle Playground Challenge.

"We are an extremely small town. We only have about 300 or 400 students in this school, and we have 30,000 votes. It's amazing to see this community rally like this," said Cheri Ottevaere, president of the Wood-Ridge Public Education Foundation.

Ottevaeres said winning the playground would be a huge deal for the kids.

"Right now they are playing with basketballs, hula hoops, using a lot of their imagination," said Ottevaere.

The parent association has taken to social media to get the word out and with help from a friend, Fiona made a special video of her own, Baker reported.

"We all have been rallying together to get a play set for these kids," said parent Eileen Helly. "There's nothing here at the moment. They just run around on their lunch breaks and play kickball and wall ball."

The school qualified thanks to its recycling efforts.

"We are promoting recycling within the school. We recycle juice boxes, Lunchables, Entenmann's Little Bites -- the entire playground structure is made from recycled oral care products," explained Ottevaere.
