NY Food Truck Lunch: Fish Tacos From Fast Food On The Way

Perry, the founder of New York Street Food, brings you his latest review on New York City street food.

There's an authentic Mexican truck that we've seen a lot on West 46th St, just east of 6th Ave. The menu has fairly standard Mexican dishes, but they also have a few Daily Specials, one of which was fish tacos. That's one of our favorites, so we ordered 2 fish tacos for $4 each, plus and an al pastor taco for $3 off the regular menu.

The tacos came with everything, which in this case meant chopped raw onion, salsa verde, crema, cilantro, cheese and shredded lettuce. All of this was topped with slices of radish and lime wedges.

Each taco had one large piece of fish that spanned the entire length of the tortilla, and even stuck out a little over the edges. The fish was seasoned and grilled, which we prefer. It was not breaded and fried. This made lunch a fairly healthy proposition.

While the fish was plentiful, it was a bit too salty for our taste. Perhaps breading might have absorbed some of the saltiness, but we would have liked less salt on the fish.

One way to know that a Mexican food truck is authentic is they use two tortillas per taco, like here. Otherwise, it's too easy for the food and sauces to break through the tortilla.

Overall, the fish tacos were pretty spicy, which seemed to come from the salsa verde.

The tacos were substantial, and two would have been enough for lunch. We suggest only ordering three tacos if you have a big appetite, like us

We enjoyed the al pastor taco more than the fish tacos. Even though they forgot the lettuce on the al pastor taco, the pork was nicely grilled and crispy. Small pieces of grilled pineapple were also inside the al pastor taco, and the fresh, juicy taste was immediately apparent.

If you're looking for an authentic Mexican meal for lunch, Fast Food On The Way should do the trick. We really liked the al pastor taco, and if the fish tacos had a little less salt, they would have been just fine. The prices were also good.

Fast Food On The Way is not a great name for a food truck. It doesn't make your mouth water, but if you see them on West 46th St or any of the other usual food truck haunts, you can get a good Mexican lunch inexpensively.
