The New York Mets went 3-4 on their West Coast trip, but they return home in first place in the NL East as they face the defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants and the Atlanta Braves this week at Citi Field.

The Mets beat the Diamondbacks, 6-3, Sunday to split their four-game series in Arizona. Jacob deGrom got the win, allowing five singles in seven innings. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, deGrom became the fourth Mets pitcher to allow no extra-base hits over four starts in the same season:

· Gary Gentry: 9/13/69 through 9/24/69
· Jon Matlack: 5/12/75 through 5/28/75
· Dwight Gooden: 6/1/84 through 6/16/84
· Jacob deGrom: 5/21/15 through 6/7/15

Welington Castillo's two-run homer in the seventh inning gave the Arizona Diamondbacks the lead for good as they held off the Mets, 2-1, Saturday night. The loss was the third by the Mets to the D-backs by a 2-1 score in their 64 regular and postseason gamesin Arizona:

· 8/5/01: Mets 1 Arizona 2 -- Sanders HR in seventh, Spivey HR in eighth
· 8/9/03: Mets 1 Arizona 2  --Finley game-winning solo HR in ninth
· 6/6/15: Mets 1 Arizona 2 -- Castillo two-run HR in seventh.

Eric Campbell snapped an 0-for-28 skid with a RBI single in the Mets' 7-2 loss to the Diamondbacks Friday night. The hitless streak was the longest by a Mets non-pitcher since Josh Thole went 0-for-30 in 2012. Here are the longest 0-fers by Mets position players:

0-for-37: Rey Ordonez, 1997
0-for-34: Don Zimmer, 1962
0-for-34: Tommie Agee, 1968
0-for-33: Joe McEwing, 2002
0-for-31: Jose Oquendo, 1984
0-for-30: Josh Thole, 2012

John Mayberry, Jr. went 4-for-5 with a home run in the Mets' 6-2 win Thursday night in Arizona. It was the first career four-hit game for Mayberry, whose career night included two doubles, two runs batted in and two runs scored.

According to the individual game finder at ultimatemets.com, Mayberry became the 14th player in Mets history to have a game with a stat line of at least four hits, two doubles, a home run, two runs and two RBIs:

· 6/14/15 -- John Mayberry, Jr. at Arz: 4-for-5, 2 2b, HR, 2R, 2 RBIs

· 7/1/00 -- Derek Bell vs. Atl: 4-for-5, 2 2b HR, 3R, 4 RBIs

A strange statistical pitching oddity took place in each of the Mets' first two games against the Padres in San Diego last week. Never in modern major league history had a starting pitcher struck out double-digit batters, allowed double-digit hits and lasted fewer than five innings until Andrew Cashner did it Monday against the Mets in New York's 7-0 win. The San Diego starter struck out 12 and allowed 11 hits before being removed with two outs in the fifth inning.

The next night, Noah Syndergaard matched Cashner's dubious feat in the Mets' 7-2 loss to the Padres. Syndergaard struck out 10 batters and let up 10 hits in four innings before being lifted for a pinch-hitter.

In fact, according to the individual game finder at ultimatemets.com, if you included all the Mets games in club history in which the starter went eight innings or fewer, there would be only five more instances where that pitcher struck out double-digit batters and allowed double-digit hits:

· 7/26/71: Ray Sadecki (NYM) vs. Stl -- 7.1ip, 10 hits, 10 Ks
· 6/28/99: Mark Langston (Mtl) vs. NYM -- 8ip, 12 hits, 10 Ks
· 6/4/90: David Cone (NYM) vs. Mtl -- 6.1ip, 11 hits, 12 Ks
· 4/19/94: Andy Benes (SD) vs. NYM -- 6.2ip, 11 hits, 10 Ks.
· 5/16/94: Bret Saberhagen (NYM) vs. Fla -- 8ip 10 hits, 10 Ks
· 6/1/15: Andrew Cashner (SD) vs. NYM -- 4.2ip, 11 hits, 12 Ks
· 6/2/15: Noah Syndergaard (NYM) at SD -- 4ip 10 hits, 10 Ks

Ruben Tejada has made eight appearances at third base this season after playing primarily shortstop and occasionally second base in his first five years in the majors with the Mets.

Nine players in Mets history have appeared in at least 30 games at second base, shortstop and third base during their time with the club:

                                                       Second base     Shortstop    Third base

·       Bob Bailor                                       120                 157            33

·       Bobby Klaus                                     97                   35              52

·       Ted Martinez                                    79                  184            32

·       Tim Foli                                              58                  129            37

·       Bill Pecota                                         38                    39            48

Happy Recap: The Mets stole four bases in the top of the ninth inning in Sunday's win at Arizona. The last time the Mets swiped four bases in one inning was on September 15, 2007 in the bottom of the third inning against the Phillies at Shea.

Nine Miles of Rough Road: Daniel Murphy became the 13th Mets player on the disabled list Friday. Only Dillon Gee and Vic Black -- who was assigned to Triple-A Las Vegas -- have come off the DL for the Mets this season.
