New Bike Lanes Leading To High Bridge Could Improve Safety

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- High Bridge has reopened and now the City Department of Transportation wants to make it easier -- and safer -- to get there.

High School students in a bicycle club helped spray paint the outline for what will be a new bike lane leading to the High Bridge and High Bridge Park, WCBS 880's Jim Smith reports.

"It's not only connecting two boroughs together, it's also connecting the community together," said Mike Arijano.

Arijano is among the teens advocating for these improvements including new bike lanes and pedestrian crosswalks in several key spots near the park.

The city DOT expects an influx of visitors to the newly reopened High Bridge.

"Making it easier to really have access to the bridge if you're walking, but also if you're riding a bike," said Assemblyman Guillermo Linares said.

The DOT says the improvements are also an extension of the mayor's vision zero initiate to reduce death and injury.
