Nassau Police: Man Tried To Grab Child, Resisted Arrest

WESTBURY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Long Island man is accused of trying to snatch a little boy from his mother and then injuring a police officer during his arrest.

As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, the judge in Nassau County looked at 35-year-old Prateek Pokhrel and said in a very stern voice "this is an attempted kidnapping. You could spend 15 years in prison if convicted."

Prosecutors said as a 5-year-old boy was holding his mother's hand at a bus stop in Westbury Friday evening, Pokhrel grabbed the little boy.

The mother managed to pull her son back and run, Hall reported.

Pokhrel then allegedly chased the mother and child before getting onto a county bus.

When officers tried to arrest him on the bus, they said he became combative and wrestled one officer to the ground. That officer suffered a fractured right hand.

In court, Pokhrel would not answer the question of whether he was a U.S. citizen, only saying he has been in the country for two years, Hall reported.

Pokhrel was arrested on charges including assault, custodial interference and resisting arrest. Bail is set at $250,000.
