Elderly Man Found Crawling, Handcuffed After Being Beaten During Robbery
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An elderly man was found handcuffed and crawling after police say he was nearly beaten to death during a robbery at his auto repair business in the Bronx, Valerie Castro reports.
The incident happened around 7:45 p.m. Saturday.
Ramon Nunez was found battered and bloodied -- still wearing the handcuffs his alleged attackers used to handcuff him when they reportedly robbed him at the business on Wales Avenue.
"He has an orbital fracture in his eye, another broken bone and his face is like twice the size from all the swelling," said Ramon Nunez Jr., the victim's son.
The son says his father was robbed by two young men wearing masks who stole $1,800 in cash, then beat his father.
"He was hit across the back with a pipe and a sink was thrown on top of him."
They also pistol whipped him across his face before he was able to get away, Castro reported.
The victim's son says his father dragged himself out of the shop still tied up and handcuffed and made his way between two cars where he hid until someone driving by noticed him.
Nunez has owned the business for nearly 30 years but another business owner in the neighborhood says the area has become a more dangerous place in the last few months.
"Ramon is a very well known and respected business owner in the community," said business owner Freddie Perez. "He has been here for many years, in shock, I'm in shock. and I'm glad that he's alive."
His son says he feels lucky to be able to celebrate Father's Day with his dad who is now home from the hospital.
He hopes the surveillance video gathered by police will help find the suspects.
