Suspect Caught On Camera Breaking Into Brooklyn Home As Family Slept

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A bold criminal was caught on camera breaking into a home in Midwood, Brooklyn, and a family of 11 inside had no idea what was happening as they slept.

As CBS2's Tracee Carrasco reported, surveillance video captures just how bold the burglar was. Around 1 a.m. Monday, a man is seen on video prying open a window and removing the screen from the  Gugenheim family's home on Avenue J in Brooklyn.

"There were 11 people here at the time, and you know, people were awake, and nobody detected him," said resident Yonah Gugenheim.

Once the burglar was done, he even put the screen back on the window. He then coolly walked away with a laptop, the video showed.

Yonah Gugenheim said the suspect also took off with two credit cards and some cash, which he brazenly grabbed upstairs just feet away from where some family members were sleeping.

"Just to come in so confidently, and come out – you know, it is, pretty, in general, it is a wake-up call," he said. "It definitely has shaken us up a little bit."

"It scares me that it might happen again; it might be worse next time," added Gavriel Gugenheim.

People in the neighborhood said such break-ins are becoming too common, and criminals are getting too comfortable.

"It's very scary, because they have little kids, and you never know when the little kid's going to wake up and what these people are going to do," said neighbor David Adler.

The family said the burglar tried to use both the stolen credit cards Monday morning. They hoped the attempted use of the credit cards would lead police to the suspect.
