EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The largest public hospital in the region has opened a new unit designed specifically for injuries that are most common during summer.

Nassau University Medical Center is opening its new orthopedics unit to assist local police and fire departments during emergencies, WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported.

It's a state-of-the-art unit with specific patients in mind, said hospital President Dr. Victor Politi.

"Most commonly from trauma," Politi said. " ... It's summertime. Lots of injuries from skateboarding, bicycling, rock climbing, falling out of trees -- you know, being boys and kids.

"Those patients a lot of times have spinal and orthopedic injuries -- fractured bones, fractured arms."

Politi said the new unit has its own nursing staff.
