Suffolk County Bans Sale Of Children's Toys Containing 6 Toxic Chemicals

SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A new law in Suffolk County has banned toys containing toxins.

As she used a handheld X-ray machine Tuesday, Bobbi Chase Wilding with Clean and Healthy New York pointed out that some toy cars, key chains, bracelets, and even colorful clothing have toxins that could cause cancer, hyperactivity, and genetic disorders in children.

"What we found was a wide range of heavy metals. Things like lead, cadmium, cobalt, have no place in children's products," she said.

Suffolk County Exec. Steve Bellone signed the bill into law that prohibits the sale of toys and children's clothing that contain six different chemicals, including arsenic, cobalt and mercury, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.

The first step is educating stores on what toys are dangerous and after the law goes into effect in December 2016, stores caught selling the toxic toys will face fines of up to $500 per violation.
