Town Of Hempstead Stepping Up Patrols For Boating While Intoxicated

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Authorities are increasing their patrols for intoxicated boaters in the water off the Town of Hempstead.

On a dock in Point Lookout Friday, Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray demonstrated the hand-held Breathalyzers that bay constables will now have as they patrol the waters.

The constables will be looking for boat operators who are intoxicated, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.

"Much like police officers do on our streets, they look for signs of erratic boating," Murray explained. "Different kinds of behaviors that are not in keeping with safe boating and safe navigating."

Murray said last year, eight people were arrested for BWI as they operated in the waters off of the town, but she added one person boating while intoxicated is one too many.
