Founder Of Community FoodBank of New Jersey Retiring After 40 Years

HILLSIDE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A New Jersey woman who has been feeding the hungry for generations is getting ready to retire.

The Community FoodBank of New Jersey has come a long way since Kathleen DiChiara first started feeding the hungry out of the trunk of her car in 1975.

"There are more people hungry now than when I began," DiChiara told WCBS 880's Peter Haskell. "We're reaching close to 900,000 people every year, and we're still not getting to everyone."

The sprawling 300,000-square-foot warehouse has racks of food up to the ceiling.

"This year we'll probably do 44 million pounds," DiChiara said.

She is convinced the organization will prosper without her after she retires later this summer.

"I'm the person out front. I get way too much credit, 'cause I did not do this alone," DiChiara said. "What I'll miss is the people."
