Long Island Woman Accidentally Runs Over, Kills 90-Year-Old Friend

OCEANSIDE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A 90-year-old woman was killed in a tragic accident on Long Island.

An 89-year-old woman was behind the wheel and her friend, 90-year-old June Guerin, was in the driveway on Windsor Parkway in Oceanside around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday when the tragedy occurred, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.

"The driver mistakenly placed the car in reverse and struck her friend as she stood behind the auto," Nassau County Police Inspector Kenneth Lack said. "The car continued to go across the street, where it came to rest."

Guerin was taken to a local hospital, where she died.

The vehicle passed brake and safety tests that were conducted at the scene, Lack said.

The driver will likely have a hearing with the Department of Motor Vehicles to determine whether her license will be revoked or is in jeopardy of any suspensions, Lack said.

"These type of incidents where you're involved in a fatal auto accident, regardless of your age, even if you're 25 or you're 90, will trigger what they call a motor vehicle hearing," Lack said.

Earlier, police had mistakenly identified Guerin as the driver of the vehicle. The name of the driver has not been released.
