Due To Charges, Ex-Speaker Silver Declines To Report Outside Income

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Former New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver has declined to report his outside income on a state disclosure form, citing federal charges that he collected nearly $4 million in kickbacks.

Silver (D-Manhattan) wrote on the disclosure forms that it would be ``inappropriate'' to detail his legal work or his non-governmental income in light of the charges.

Silver, 71, is free on bail after his January arrest on charges he exploited his power in Albany to take the in kickbacks.

The latest version of the indictment added accusations that he did "official'' favors for an investor who gave him access to high-yield investment opportunities.

Silver said he will be exonerated.

Former Senate Leader Dean Skelos, a Long Island Republican, is fighting unrelated charges that he traded his influence for payments and a job for his son.

Skelos, who also maintains his innocence, reported making between $150,000 and $250,000 from his law firm last year even though he reports providing no direct services to clients.

The disclosures were filed in May and made publicly available this week.
