Miss Susie, Oldest Person In The World Celebrates, 116th Birthday In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- There were speeches, gifts, music and dancing to celebrate the 116th birthday of Susannah Mushatte Jones, who is the oldest person in the world.

The celebration was held Tuesday at the Vandalia Senior Center in Brooklyn.

Miss Susie was born on July 6, 1899 in Alabama.

She was married for about five years and although she never had any children of her own, she has more than 100 nieces and nephews.

Her friends call her a legend.

"She's wonderful, she's marvelous," said Mildred Perman. "She's fabulous and now we pay tribute to her."

"Even she doesn't believe it. When I told her about this, she said 'That's not true,'" niece Lois Judge told WCBS 880's Marla Diamond. "And I'm thinking with all the people in the world, how can she be the oldest?"

Judge said she thinks Miss Susie's clean living has something to do with it.

"She used to say it has to do with no partying and no drinking," Judge said.

But Miss Susie does love bacon for breakfast, Diamond reported.

Among the gifts presented to Jones were a Brooklyn Cyclones baseball hat and a Brooklyn Nets jersey.
