NJ Teen Stuns Crowd, Wins $50,000 With Long Distance, Trick Soccer Shot

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It was a trick shot that you never want to happen in a game, but it won a New Jersey soccer player a huge pay check on live TV.

As CBS2's Meg Baker reported, a Jersey kid kicked his way to $50,000.

"I was nervous, favorite athletes, millions of people watching, nerve-racking, but I was really pumped up, ready to go. I wanted to win the cash prize so I was excited to take that shot," Roee Maor said.

Maor, 13, from Demarest stunned the crowd on Thursday night at Nickelodeon's Kids Choice Sports 2015 awards show.

Maor said the competition went against everything he ever learned about soccer. Normally you want to get the ball in the net, in this case he had to hit the crossbar. That's exactly what he did, from 30 yards out, on his first shot.

"I was so excited, I couldn't believe it. I started running, Russell tried to catch me, but I kept running around," he said.

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, the show's host, looked just as pumped about the shot as Roee.

The teen qualified for the show at an event in the Bronx, where he hit the post twice in less than a minute, before falling to the ground with excitement. He was then honored at Yankee Stadium.

Maor plans to save some of the money for college and donate some to a charity builds fields for kids in third world countries.

He previously donated his bar mitzvah money for a goal post for kids in Uganda.

Roee said he and his brother made a last-minute decision to try out at the competition in the Bronx, and he is happy that he did.
