Authorities Identify Toddler Killed In Elizabeth Mail Truck Accident

ELIZABETH, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Authorities have released the name of a toddler who was killed when a mail truck struck her grandmother, who was carrying the child across the street in Elizabeth.

Officials say 2-year-old Sofia Flores died in Monday morning's accident at Rahway Avenue and Chilton Street. Her 4-year-old brother and their grandmother were hospitalized with undisclosed injuries.

A witness, named Andres, said the girl was thrown from her grandmother's arms by the impact.

"The baby came out flying. They hit the floor," Andres said. "You never expect to see something like that."

The toddler was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

The grandmother, 55-year-old Anna Chacon, underwent surgery and was in critical but stable condition Tuesday. Details on the boy's condition have not been disclosed.

No charges have been filed so far and the crash remains under investigation. The driver of the mail truck remained at the scene and was not injured.

The postal service issued a statement saying it was conducting "a full investigation.''
