Connecticut Lawmakers Call For Hearings On Juvenile Detention Facilities

HARTFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Legislative leaders in Connecticut said Tuesday that they want the state General Assembly to hold hearings about the conditions and practices at juvenile detention facilities.

Senate President Martin Looney (D-New Haven) and House Speaker Brendan Sharkey (D-Hamden) announced Tuesday they've asked the chairmen of several legislative committees to schedule the hearings in light of a recent investigative report from the Office of the Child Advocate and an action plan from the Department of Children and Families.

The date of the first hearing is expected to be announced soon.

The child advocate report found delinquent youths have been subjected to unlawful and repeated restraint and isolation at the Connecticut Juvenile Training School and the Pueblo Unit in Middletown.

Looney said it is important that lawmakers have a full accounting of facts to ensure the safety of the youths.
