'Fruit Man' Continues To Promote Healthy Eating With Act On NYC Streets

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Forget social media.

A New York City performance artist continues to spread his message the old fashion way: out on the street.

You may have seen Otis Houston Jr., also known as "Fruit Man," on the FDR Drive or the West Side Highway.

Houston, who has now relocated to Lower Broadway, has been performing his balancing act with assorted and delicious fruits for nearly 20 years.

When 1010 WINS' Juliet Papa ran into him, he was standing as a still as a statue, balancing a mango on top of a coconut on his head while biting one orange and hold two others in his hands.

It may be a strange and colorful sight, but Houston said it's not just about entertainment, it's about promoting healthy eating.

"I read on the Internet the other day that in America just 15 percent of Americans eat enough fruits and vegetables," Houston said.

Houston calls the act "Fruit with Integrity."
