Jersey City Police Officer, Multiple Pedestrians Struck By Speeding Vehicle

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Multiple people, including a Jersey City police officer, were struck by a car that was sent flying onto the sidewalk by a speeding vehicle, officials say.

Witnesses tell CBS2's Hazel Sanchez that the maroon minivan was traveling at a high rate of speed around 8 p.m. Sunday on Ocean Avenue near Myrtle Avenue, and struck a silver Sedan sending that car onto the sidewalk.

At least 12 people were injured in the accident and transported to local hospitals for evaluation and treatment, according to Jersey City spokesperson Jennifer Morrill. They are all reportedly in stable condition.

The condition of the officer has not been released at this time.

Melisa King saw the whole incident from her front yard. She said the driver tried to run but police arrested him on the scene.

"I was shocked my heart was pounding," King said. "And kids were even riding bikes playing football where it happened."

The incident is under investigation by police. The driver of the vehicle was detained at the scene.
