Sgt. Michael Baker said in a statement that the southbound bus crossed the median into oncoming traffic. A northbound car swerved off the interstate to avoid the bus and slammed into a tree.

The crash killed the motorist's wife, 54-year-old Enid Ortiz of Palm Bay, Florida. Their grandchildren, ages 12 and 13, received treatment at a Raleigh hospital.

Bus driver Eric Jimmerson of New York City was ejected from the vehicle. Troopers say the 23-year-old was hospitalized in critical condition.
