East Ramapo Parents Sue School Board, Seek Members' Removal

SPRING VALLEY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Irate parents in the East Ramapo school district served legal documents to board members at a packed meeting Tuesday night.

Parents have asked the state Education Department to remove board members, The Journal News reported. They also are reportedly suing the board over taxpayer money used to defend members against a class action civil rights lawsuit also filed by parents.

It's the latest salvo in the ongoing battle in the financially troubled district.

Last year, a state review found there was no malice but concluded the Orthodox Jewish-controlled board showed favoritism to yeshiva students and redirected funds away from the public schools, whose students are mostly Hispanic and black.

Board members quickly exited Tuesday's meeting, WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported. In the past, they have said the real problem is inadequate state funding.
