Police: Woman Gave Attempted Rape Suspect $20 Not To Harm Her In Williamsburg

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police on Thursday were searching for a suspect in an attempted rape near McCarren Park in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Around 11:20 p.m. this past Saturday, the 24-year-old woman was walking near Bayard and Leonard streets – the southeast corner of McCarren Park – when the suspect ran up, grabbed her by the neck, and began fondling her genitals, police said.

The suspect told the woman he was going to have sex with her, police said.

The woman pleaded with the man and offered him money not to do anything to her, police said.

The suspect agreed to take the money, and went with the woman to an ATM where she took out $20 and handed it to him, police said.

The suspect then ran off, police said. The victim refused medical attention at the scene.

Police have released surveillance video of the suspect.

Anyone with information was asked to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS, log onto the Crime Stoppers website, or text tips to 274637 (CRIMES) and enter TIP577.
