A, C Subway Riders Face Weekend Disruptions For Sandy Repair Work

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- There's a commuter alert for weekend subway riders.

The tunnel that carries the A and C lines between Manhattan and Brooklyn will be shut down in both directions for Sandy-related repair work.

"We had millions of gallons of corrosive salt water that flooded the tunnel and damaged everything from tracks, signals, pumping equipment, electrical and switching equipment as well," MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz told 1010 WINS.

The tunnel will have to be shut down for 40 non-consecutive weekends for repairs through next summer.

"We worked hard to make temporary repairs to restore service as quickly as possible for our customers after the storm, but we knew full well that we would need to go back into the tunnel to make more permanent repairs down the road to ensure safe and reliable service moving forward," Ortiz said.

The A and C trains will be running on the F line between West 4th Street in Manhattan and Jay Street-Metrotech in Brooklyn.

Service should be back to normal for Monday morning's commute.

The work is part of a $96.7 million project that includes repairs, installations and fortifications to components in the tunnel, Ortiz said.
