2 People, Dog Rescued From Burning Boat Offshore From Ocean City, N.J.
OCEAN CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Two people and a dog were rescued Sunday, after a boat went up in flames offshore from Ocean City, New Jersey.
The pair and the dog abandoned the boat when it caught fire around 10:45 a.m., according to the Coast Guard. They notified watch standards on a marine radio, put on life jackets, and evacuated to a dinghy, the Coast Guard said.
A Coast Guard crew from Atlantic City arrived just after 11 a.m., and the two people and the dog then boarded the Coast Guard ship.
"The owner's understanding of emergency procedures allowed for quick Coast Guard response," Petty Officer 1st Class Neena Santiago, an operations specialist at the Sector Delaware Bay command center, said in a news release. "His vessel was equipped with a VHF marine radio, life jackets and a dinghy - all crucial to the safety of the people aboard and their dog."
People lining the beach and others in nearby waterfront homes could see smoke rising from the burning boat about three-and-a-half miles offshore, CBS Philly reported.
The people on the boat and the dog did not require medical assistance.
