Old Bethpage Village Restoration Preservationists Not Happy About 'Tough Mudder' Run

OLD BETHPAGE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Old Bethpage Village restoration preservationists are not very happy about this weekend's "Tough Mudder" run.

8,000 people signed up for the competition where you tread through mud pits, try to avoid electrical shocks and jump into ice water.

But preservationists are worried the rough and tumble obstacle course will destroy the village's roads, open space and buildings.

Event organizer Hilary May told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall that they are trying to work together.

"We worked really closely with the Parks Department to make sure that the course route and the obstacles that we have out there aren't going to disrupt any historical or sensitive areas," May said.

May said they do a full clean-up after the 2-day event.

"Our construction team will be out there doing restoration," May said. "We're filling all the pits, we reseeded, we make sure that it comes right back to life and it's exactly how we left it."

The 209-acre village, which includes 51 historic buildings, will be closed to the public for the event, said Mary Studdert, a spokeswoman for the Nassau County parks department.
