Drivers: Rest Stop Desperately Needed Along Long Island Expressway

HUNTINGTON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The state Department of Transportation has withdrawn its bid to build a rest area off the Long Island Expressway in Huntington, between exits 51 and 52.

The move comes after local officials voiced anger over the clearing of land at the site without their knowledge.

But as the two sides try to work out their differences, drivers on the always-busy LIE told WCBS Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs they need bathrooms there.

"I would offer this advice: For people like me, who are traveling for hours to get to eastern Long Island, we would like another rest stop," one man said.

That driver calls it bizarre that there are no toilet-equipped rest stops on the LIE.

The DOT said it is still reviewing the project.
