Police: Pocketbook Theft Caught On Video At Supermarket In Cedar Grove

CEDAR GROVE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - Keep your eyes on your belongings.

One woman was shopping for groceries when an opportunistic thief took advantage of a 10 second gap in her attention.

The victim was shopping at the Foodtown Supermarket on Pompton Avenue in Cedar Grove last Thursday afternoon. She had her pocketbook in her shopping cart.

On the video, the victim can be seen turning her attention to some items on the shelves - with her back to her shopping cart, and pocketbook. A young woman paces by, looks around, then grabs the victim's pocketbook out of her cart.

The suspect then walks off with the bag.

When the victim turned around to her shopping cart, she doesn't seem to immediately notice the pocketbook was missing.

A few moments later, the suspect walks right past the victim, concealing the stolen pocketbook behind her. The suspect left with another woman, who is older, and had a toddler with her.

The entire theft was caught on video.

The thieves wasted no time and immediately made purchases using the victim's credit cards at three different locations at the Willowbrook Mall, police said.

The suspects got away in a  large black SUV, believed to be a Chevrolet, police said.

Anyone with any information is asked to call authorities at (973) 239-4100.
