Summer Bummer: Many New Jersey Students Heading Back To Class Before Labor Day

RAMSEY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Like it or not, it will be an early start to the school year for many kids this year.

As 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported, with Labor Day occurring late this year, many schools in New Jersey are opening next week -- ahead of the unofficial end of summer.

And while Robert is downright bummed about it, he said his parents are pretty happy.

"Oh they can't wait," he said.

Charles, a lifeguard, was still in summer mode.

"Oh I didn't even know that it started Wednesday. I just think the school always starts at the same time," he said.

Among the schools getting a head start are Northern Highlands High School, which starts Wednesday, and Ramsey High School, which chose to open on Thursday.

But Sam and her classmates at Westwood High School got a break.

"I'm actually going back to Sept. 8 because they're doing construction on my school," she said.

But her parents are both teachers, so they're going back to school a week earlier than usual.

"My mom works in Park Ridge and my dad works in Paterson," she said.

The schools who chose to start early this year, will also end earlier in June.
